St Idesbald Tripel
— 2/5. Rich dark gold colour but not much in the nose. Very bitter on the tongue and a rather acidic aftertaste.”

By Brouwerij Huyghe. 33cl, 9% ABV, serve at 9°
The saint gives his name to one of Flanders’ artist communities, home among others to the renowned surrealist Paul Delvaux. Though Idesbald died in the latter part of the twelth century, his corpse was said to be immaculate when his coffin was opened in 1623.
Rather less immaculate is the eponymous tripel, which is something of a lowlight for the Brouwerij Huyghe. Lustrous dark gold colour and very slightly cloudy. Not too much learned from first sniffs, perhaps a hint of toffee and fruit but a strong suspicion of alcohol. Taste confirms it: quite refreshing but very bitter on the tongue and a long-lasting acidic aftertaste. A bit disappointing.

5/5. Golden and lively with plenty of fizz. A little harsh as it meets the tongue, but packs a mature and very mellow finish. Definitely one of my favourite blondes.

3/5. Hops, figs, licorice and a nice sourness. Not as powerful as other notables but a solid brew all the same.

5/5. Lustrous dark brown brew with a dense, lasting head. Smells like bitter chocolate and soot. Tastes rooty, smoky and sweet.
