Sint Bernardus Christmas Ale
— 4/5. Stronger and less smooth than the 12 Abt but with many of the same flavours - definitely a winter warmer.”

By Sint Bernardus Watou. 75cl, 10% ABV, serve at 10°
As the name suggests, this is the Christmas edition of the excellent Bernardus ales and it’s yet another enjoyable brew.
There are similarities with the Sint Bernardus 12 Abt in both taste and appearance. Like the 12, the Christmas ale is very dark with a respectable brown head and it retains the licorice and malt aromas. The slightly stronger alcohol content is well hidden.
What’s different with the Christmas edition is that there’s also something deeper, smokier and indeed rougher in the blend. It’s a risky balance to strike – like the difference between roasting coffee beans and burning them – but they’ve pulled it off here.

5/5. Don’t let the heavy alcohol content put you off: Black Albert is nothing less than a sour revelation.

5/5. Peppery and woody with a touch of plums, there’s also plenty of nuts, caramel and even a bit of salty licorice in there.

3/5. Hops, figs, licorice and a nice sourness. Not as powerful as other notables but a solid brew all the same.
