Orval

3 stars out of 5

33cl, 6.2% ABV, serve at room temperature

The monastery at Orval owes its foundation to a colourful legend. The pious widow Mathilda of Tuscany lost her wedding ring in a fountain here and the Man Upstairs had a trout swim to the surface with the ring in its mouth.

Both trout and ring duly appear on the label of this handsome bottle, the proceeds of which maintain the present-day monastery and its earlier, 18th century incarnation.

Easily found in stores, enjoy this one at room temperature. Dark and fizzy, unexpectedly light and bitter. Flavours include grass, orange peel and grapefruit.

5/5. One of the last genuine Trappist beers, this is one of Belgium’s most famous beers. Figgy, dark and subtle.

Hello you, I'm Mike Padgett. I'm not a Princeton curator, Knoxville mayoral candidate, Kentuckian pastor or Arizona journalist, I just share the same name. In fact, I am a consultant working in user experience and information design.

I also enjoy travel, concerts, films and walking.

I'm originally from Yorkshire, England but nowadays I live in Belgium. My current favourite Belgian beer is Black Albert.

Over a year in the making, Dopeology.org is my latest personal project: a topology of doping in thirty years of European pro road cycling.

I collected information from thousands of sources, then I modelled and published it via a lightweight user interface.
