Noir de Dottignies

— 3/5. Hops, figs, licorice and a nice sourness. Not as powerful as other notables but a solid brew all the same.”

Noir de Dottignies

3 stars out of 5

By Brouwerij De Ranke. 33cl, 9% ABV, serve at 10°

Just a few kilometres from the French border, Dottignies was transferred to Wallonie in 1962. The beer after which it is named is brewed up the road in Wevelgem close to Belgium’s major hop region.

Lots of hops have found their way into this dark beer. It has a pleasantly mouldy, slightly cheesy scent. The taste is sour, not quite like stout, but agreeably bitter. There are also dark chocolate, figs and salty licorice flavours in here.

In the finish it’s neither as unctuous as a Rochefort or an Alpaïde, nor as bitter as a Ellezelloise Hercule, but this particular Dottignies is in the right region.

5/5. Lustrous dark brown brew with a dense, lasting head. Smells like bitter chocolate and soot. Tastes rooty, smoky and sweet.
