Ellezelloise Hercule Stout

5 stars out of 5

33cl, 9% ABV, serve at 12°

Agatha Christie’s detective Hercule Poirot was born in the real-life town of Ellezelles, where the locals have falsified a birth certificate to ‘prove’ the origins of their fictional famous son. Poirot’s birthday, apparently, is April 1st.

Sitting prominently among Belgium’s best is Ellezelle’s Hercule Stout, though it’s so hard to find that you can hardly accuse the brewery of cashing in on Christie.

This is a genuine stout, if rather light to the taste, with rich flavours including coffee, cigars and licorice. A beautiful brew and one of my personal favourites!

I have just made a nice walk on your website, if I may call it so. Started from Beloeil (which was what I was searching for), through movies and books, some citty hopping and photos to the beer list (and I have to say since I moved to Belgium I enjoy the beer culture as much as possible). Till now I have not tried the Ellezelloise Stout, despite eating somewhere there in one restaurant full of pumpkins ant witches :)

    Nice website!
    Cheers,

    Tomek

3/5. Hops, figs, licorice and a nice sourness. Not as powerful as other notables but a solid brew all the same.

5/5. Lustrous dark brown brew with a dense, lasting head. Smells like bitter chocolate and soot. Tastes rooty, smoky and sweet.
