De Struise Pannepot 2008

4 stars out of 5

33cl, 10% ABV, serve at 12°

A ‘pannepot’ is a small fishing boat with distinctive batwing sails, typically found sailing close to the shore at De Panne when the fishing industry still dominated the northern Flemish harbours.

De Struise (Flemish for ‘sturdy’) is a young and often controversial company and the two ostriches in the company label are explained by the fact that, in addition to brewing, the owners also farm these birds further inland.

This Pannepot, which also forms the base beer for a Reserva edition, is quite sweet (perhaps too sweet for my tastes) and has notes of raisins, apples, spices and chocolate.
