De Dolle Oerbier

4 stars out of 5

33cl, 9% ABV, serve at 8°

North west of Antwerp and right on the border with the Netherlands, the De Dolle Brouwers (“the Mad Brewers”) have been at work since 1980 in a formerly disused 19th century brewery.

The De Dolle range is renowned for its strength. Of the three De Dolle brews in this collection (the others being Arabier and Stille Nacht), this is the strongest and there’s also a slightly more obscure Bordeaux cask-matured version of it.

Unsurprisingly there’s lots of wood here along with sherry and vanilla, but also a yoghurty tartness that comes from the lactobacillic brewing process.
