Caracole Saxo

3 stars out of 5

By Brasserie Caracole. 33cl, 8% ABV, serve at 10°

This shy little brasserie can be found at Falmignoul, in the southern part of the Province de Namur and it can be visited throughout the year. Distinctive label artwork. We’ve also tried their Nostradamus at some point in the recent past and I have good, if rather hazy, memories of that.

Dark gold and just a little cloudy, the Saxo has a strong head but it’s not particularly fizzy. It has a lightly floral scent and a fairly generous body with a touch of something spicy. It goes down very smoothly indeed.

3/5. Hazy, golden white beer. Taste doesn’t quite live up to the extraordinary bouquet but still a friendly proposition.

2/5. Rich dark gold colour but not much in the nose. Very bitter on the tongue and a rather acidic aftertaste.

5/5. Peppery and woody with a touch of plums, there’s also plenty of nuts, caramel and even a bit of salty licorice in there.
