Bourgogne des Flandres

3 stars out of 5

33cl, 5% ABV, serve at 7°

The brewery – Martin’s – was founded by a Briton who first introduced the Belgian nation to Bass Pale Ale. The nation’s reactions to this are not recorded.

The title is a play on words : the Duchy of Burgundy once ruled Flanders, but here the burgundy is all Flanders’ own (even if it’s just the colour of the beer).

Dark, caramelised and malty, Bourgogne des Flandres is pleasantly light and only slightly sour. Best enjoyed on draught at A l’Imaige De Nostre Dame in downtown Brussels, where it would get another star on the rating!

3/5. Hops, figs, licorice and a nice sourness. Not as powerful as other notables but a solid brew all the same.

3/5. Tastes rather like a gueuze: a bit tart with a nice touch of vanilla, autumn fruits and some balsamic vinegar for good measure.
