Boon Duivels Bier
— 2/5. Chocolate and caramel flavours with a suspicion of cola. Rather too sweet for my taste.”

By Brouwerij Boon. 33cl, 8% ABV, serve at 14°
The Boon brewery in Lembeek, a Flemish village halfway between Halle and Tubize, is most famous for its gueuze and kriek, both of which are mainstream products on the Belgian market. Lesser known is this dark, devilish brew, though Boon has been turning it out since 1883.
Reminiscent of its more famous siblings, the Duivels is fizzy and surprisingly thin. It smells pretty lively, hoppy with a hint of some chocolate.
The caramel flavour of the candy sugar is very obvious and there’s even a suspicion of cola. The chocolate does follow through but on the whole rather too sweet for my taste.

5/5. Lustrous dark brown brew with a dense, lasting head. Smells like bitter chocolate and soot. Tastes rooty, smoky and sweet.

4/5. Looking almost like a red wine, intense and complex aroma is intense. Dry taste with only very slight bitterness and packed with caramel.

3/5. Hops, figs, licorice and a nice sourness. Not as powerful as other notables but a solid brew all the same.
