New job

— A few first thoughts on my new job as Interaction Designer at RM.”

Hello! I’m in my new job now, as Interaction Designer at RM plc, one of those few businesses to have cottoned on quick enough to get a two-letter domain name.

RM is the big organisation in the education sector and it has a long history. It manufactured one of the first computers I ever used way back when. Hardware was its core business originally, but nowadays, it is probably more concerned with software and applications.

A lot of people who know both RM and me were surprised that I got a job here. Indeed, some even said I would be the last person they would imagine would work for a company like this. But there’s one thing that drew me here, apart from the more conventional motivations of dosh and a short commute. That thing is progress.

Call security!

RM is in the process of changing its web systems quite substantially. Of course, one might argure that the back-end changes constantly, and it does. But the front-end is ripe for change. John, the only other designer here, has started this process already, so I intend to continue with that trend.

Who you gonna call?

Hello you, I'm Mike Padgett. I'm not a Princeton curator, Knoxville mayoral candidate, Kentuckian pastor or Arizona journalist, I just share the same name. In fact, I am a consultant working in user experience and information design.

I also enjoy travel, concerts, films and walking.

I'm originally from Yorkshire, England but nowadays I live in Belgium. My current favourite Belgian beer is Black Albert.

Over a year in the making, Dopeology.org is my latest personal project: a topology of doping in thirty years of European pro road cycling.

I collected information from thousands of sources, then I modelled and published it via a lightweight user interface.
