Oude Kwaremont: Kuurne Brussel Kuurne 2010

Oude Kwaremont

The day after the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and Juan Antonio Flecha’s thrilling victory in Gent, the weather turned decidedly foul. The riders set out from Kuurne to be buffeted by strong winds and heavy rain.

Undeterred we headed for Kwaremont, an arty Flemish village through the centre of which runs the famous Oude Kwaremont cobbled hill.

The Oude Kwaremont is a staple of the Flemish Classics. It is not especially steep in comparison with other climbs but unlike the others, it is significantly longer at over two kilometres from end to end.

3/5. Cloudy, earthy beer with deep coriander flavour and a touch of mustard, though not as strong tasting as expected.

5/5. Peppery and woody with a touch of plums, there’s also plenty of nuts, caramel and even a bit of salty licorice in there.

Hello you, I'm Mike Padgett. I'm not a Princeton curator, Knoxville mayoral candidate, Kentuckian pastor or Arizona journalist, I just share the same name. In fact, I am a consultant working in user experience and information design.

I also enjoy travel, concerts, films and walking.

I'm originally from Yorkshire, England but nowadays I live in Belgium. My current favourite Belgian beer is Black Albert.

Shameless self-promotion

Over a year in the making, Dopeology.org is my latest personal project: a topology of doping in thirty years of European pro road cycling.

I collected information from thousands of sources, then I modelled and published it via a lightweight user interface.
